South African Gems
South Africa remains one of the best sources for high-quality, character-driven white wines at accessible prices. This month, two bottles worth your attention: a newly released vintage Sauvignon Blanc from the cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and a consistently excellent Chenin Blanc from old vines in Stellenbosch. Different in style but equally compelling, they highlight why South African whites continue to gain global recognition.

Crafted by Hamilton Russell's satellite winery, this Sauvignon Blanc comes from the cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just inland from Walker Bay. The 2023 vintage is bright and linear, with precision and minerality that rivals Sancerre. Expect notes of lime zest, gooseberry, and crushed seashells, with a clean, saline finish that makes it an ideal pairing for oysters, sushi, or fresh goat cheese.
$24.95/btl - Available through LCBO Vintages.
Known as the “King of Chenin,” Ken Forrester consistently sets the benchmark for South African Chenin Blanc. Sourced from 40-year-old bush vines in Stellenbosch, this barrel-fermented white balances richness with freshness. Aromas of ripe pear, baked apple, and a hint of honey lead into a creamy yet structured palate, rounded out by vibrant acidity. This is a versatile food wine that works just as beautifully with roast chicken as it does with Thai curry.
$18.95/btl - Available through LCBO Vintages.
